- Introduction:
This pictorial study of the slot machine covers the design development from the earliest mechanical gambling machines invented in the 1880's to contemporary slot machine styles. Particular emphasis has been placed on the period from 1929 to 1941, an era when the slot machine was a common amusement and gambling device in many sections of the United States. A tremendous variety of different designs and models were constantly being introduced during this innovative period by the different manufacturers of this Chicagobased industry. The brightly painted cast metal fronts of early slot machines had a beauty and style all their own. The strong construction and durability of these games was even more impressive as the majority of the drawings in this book were made referring to actual 30 to 50 year old working units.
Today's modern, highly styled slot machines retain the familiar handle and reel action but now host a complete range of sophisticated play, odds and payout features. In addition, the construction must be of virtual bank vault standards to withstand the 24 hour play and handle pounding in Nevada's casinos. The new slots must also keep up with the cheat artist by constantly developing elaborate new systems to protect the machine. Today, the average player demands a game with a variety of play and odds features with big, multiple jackpot action. Gaming management in turn demands a tough reliable game with the ability to make perfect payouts continuously with protective anti-cheat and accounting systems. These are the main factors which have made the old style, completely mechanical slot machines obsolete.
This book represents an effort to preserve the historical and artistic merits of the early slot machines and to bring the reader up-to-date on their present state of development. In preparing this book over a three year period, I have tried to select a premium group of machines which represent the finest designs of their time.
